After the Ending
What changes in the worlds after the last fight, and where to go when it is all over.
This page is about what happens after the victory at the Focus. Everything below is under a hard spoiler: the general “show spoilers” switch does not open it. If you have not reached the end yet, it is better to get there yourself.
The light is whole again
Sixteen seconds after the last master falls, everyone who fought gets a strong moment: slabs spread across the ground, three strikes — one for each road — and a pillar of light into the sky; a constellation lights up overhead and sends rays down. Each player has their own moment. Whoever left the game earlier sees it the next time they enter the world.
After that:
- gate frames flare. Walk within forty blocks of the gate ring of any world — awake or asleep: the ring answers with a pillar of light and a sign in the sky. Once on each world;
- the Boötes Void grows lighter. In the astrograph, between Ursa Major and Cygnus, there is a dark patch with almost no
stars. New points now show in it, and the crosshair hint says something else. The void is an anomaly codex entry: click it
with an
Imaging Plate in your inventory. A photograph of the dark patch is the “before” record (you can take it
long before the ending); a photograph after the victory is the “after” record: it completes the entry and changes its
text. If you never photographed the patch dark, one plate gives you both records; - the facetkin of the Facet greet you differently, and their eldest has an answer to what their First Cut was waiting for.
The Last Tablet
The niche in the Heart of the Focus gives its tablet only to someone who has won — before the fight it stays silent, even if the heart is already awake. Read it to the end: the window closes by itself and the reading moment begins — three beams from the sky and three columns of the roads around you merge into one light. Read it right there, in the Heart: the camera follows the column up, under the dome of the arena. With the moment, the Wayfarer blueprint lands in your inventory (see The Wayfarer and the Sewn Roads). What the tablet says will not be written here: it is the only place in the game where it is said.
The Prism Gate
On the plains of the Facet stand Prism Gates — two pillars of prism glass with a lintel and an empty opening; the facetkin sweep the dais and wait. Walk within twenty-four blocks: the opening fills with threads of white light. Then step onto the carved threshold between the pillars.
In a world created before the epilogue update the gate stands without a threshold — it appears by itself when someone who went through the ending walks up: there is no need to look for a new gate in unexplored land.
The gate opens only for someone who went through the ending themselves. In multiplayer the opening stays empty for a player who has not won, and the threshold does not carry them.
The Overlook
Beyond the gate there is no new world, only a place to stand and look: a cut stone of the Ringwrights hanging over the Galaxy.
- The sky. The whole Milky Way from outside: the core is to the north, the far edge of the disc climbs to the zenith, the near edge goes under your feet. Three arcs from home to the core are the three roads you walked; lights run along them. The sparks around home are the places among the stars you have been to. To the right, in the north-east, is Andromeda.
- The pier. A narrow spur to the north. From its end, just below the horizon, you can see the Sun — a point in a ring — and, lower to the left, the Magellanic Clouds.
- The Light Basin in the middle. The first touch gives a
Whole Light — a lamp as bright as a beacon,
a keepsake of the road; one for every traveler. Later touches recount the road: tablets, masters, places, anomalies, gates. - You cannot fall: the light returns anyone who slips off the platform to the gate.
- The way back is the same threshold in the gate on the southern edge: it returns you to where you came from — to the gate on the Facet, even if you left the game while on the platform.
What next
- The repeatable task after the ending — “Blind Spots”.
- The ship of every road — “The Wayfarer and the Sewn Roads”.
