Slag Beetle

A heavy beetle of the slag isles. Its wing-cases are black slag glass that never quite cooled, and every crack in them shows the melt inside; now and then it lifts them like bellows to fan the fire. It scrapes crust off the shore of the golden sea and leaves everyone alone, but strike it and it clamps shut: nothing gets through until the cracks cool.
