The Sky Road
The whitest world in the Solar System: its snow falls from its own geysers. In the southern basin four fissures run side by side — the tiger stripes, warm blue ice that glows at night. Jets beat from their floors in a wall a quarter of a kilometer high, and a wave runs along it; a jet throws whoever steps on it sixty blocks up. In the ice by the stripes lie greenish nests of phosphate rime. Use phosphate salt on a hydroponic bed: the crop on it grows twice as fast until the salt is spent. Geyser hoppers ride the jets and glide down. In the middle of the basin four dark pipes sing one song of four notes — listen to it. Under the basin lies a pocket of sea. Saturn hangs in the north, its rings a thin bright ellipse; at noon the Sun goes behind it.

Frozen Fountain

A jet that the cold caught in flight: arcs of blue ice over a mound of snow, each ending in icicles. The vent in the middle still breathes.

Plume Catcher

A station that sieved the snow of the jets: the funnel on the mast caught what fell, the crates below took it. Whoever worked here found what they came for and left the mast to the frost.

Tiger Organ

Four dark pipes over the warm heart of the tiger stripes, set by someone long before the snow. They sing one song of four notes, round and round. Walk the plates at their feet in the order of the song, and the seal in the middle lets you down — through the ice, into a hall that hangs in the sea.

Weather

  • Plume Snowfall. The tide pulls the tiger stripes wider: the wall of jets stands half again as high, their snow comes down all over the world, and phosphate salt settles with it.

Events

  • The Great Jet. Jets break through the snow and lift all they catch. Rush past the freezing throat: phosphate and stardust hang in the plume
  • Boiling Snow. Gas boils up through the snow: the patches go loose, and you sink in them. The gas carries phosphate grains to the surface
