The Ring at the Edge

A ring of the same make as the gates of the worlds, five times their size, alone on the glacier at the end of the Sun's country. It faces no other gate. It is broken in eight places, and something in it is waiting.

Horizon Lander

A lander of an old expedition, frozen into the glacier up to its knees. Its dish still looks at the Sun — from here just the brightest star. On the plate under the dish: nine names, and a pinch of ash of the man who found this world.

Sublimation Well

Here the nitrogen ice went off into the air faster than new ice could creep in: a round pit with ledges winding down. Heart ice runs down its walls in a vein, and the largest druse glows at the bottom.

Threshold Waymark

A pillar of the same metal as the Ring at the Edge, with a small ring on top. They stand on the uplands around the heart: this is how one walked to the ring. Those who walked left an offering at its foot.
