The Wanderer

A tower that once burned with a crown of lamps. Its great sign faces where their star used to be, and its disc is black. The top of the tower lies on the ice beside it, a lamp still whole inside. There is a socket for a lamp at the top: give the tower its light back, and it will give back what it kept.

A round hall of the Orphans, its dome fallen in. The well in the middle is shut. In the east chamber four signs tell how their star went out: walk the floor plates in that order, and the well opens. Below, under the ice, the lake is warm, and a lamp still burns by the island: turn the mirrors until its light reaches the sign of the star, and the vault opens. There the Orphans left what they wanted found.

Eight stones in a ring, every one turned outward to the dark, with the Orphans' sign where eyes would be. Here they watched for where the hunger would come from next. Three signs on the stele say what they saw: walk the plates of the ring in that order, and the chest in the middle opens.
