Chapter: Artifice

A place can be grown anew. Study the Wellspring and Confluence and read the grass under your feet.

How to open it

  • Read with the Loupe: Grass Block or Moss Block or Dewy Turf

A Biome Converter grows a new place around itself. Feed it distillate and the land's flux, and everything within 128 blocks of its tower slowly becomes the chosen biome: other ground and grass, other trees and flowers, other creatures, its own color of water and sky. The growth spreads in a circle from the heart with a soft edge; where the place has grown it is real — F3 shows it, and its creatures are born there.

2

Build a 3×3 tower four blocks tall and set the heart — the Place Seed — in the middle of the chamber's lower tier, niche toward you. Sprinkle Quickdust on the built tower: it folds into one device — a greenhouse of a place with a glass chamber and an opaline druse on its crown; only a folded tower grows. Reach through the niche or click any part with an empty hand to open the window: the places it can grow, the feed of the chosen one, and the course. Break any part and the tower turns back into blocks, each returned as it was laid.

The feed is Shift and two currents of the new place that the tower's place lacks: the window names them with runes. The heart draws them itself from vessels and Gyres within six blocks, or by a siphon from above through the crown; the flux comes from the land under the tower, never below the riverbed's bottom. What is missing, the window and the Loupe tell in a line.

4

Numbers. A dose of each feed current grows 8 cells of the place (128 blocks²); a cell costs another quarter of a flux; the place grows no faster than one and a half cells a second. The full circle is about half an hour of fed work and about three hundred doses of each current.

5

What changes and what does not. Old trees dissolve into flux without a splinter, and trees of the new place take their spot; so do grass and flowers. The new place covers the whole circle — under the tower and under buildings too. Buildings are left alone: a column whose top is not a natural block stays as it was, while the ground right next to it changes; crops and saplings stay, and so does a tree that touches a building; claims hold. It grows only in the Overworld. Break the heart and the growth stands, what has grown stays. Restore drives the growth back to the heart on Shift alone: the native ground, trees and flowers rise again. Two Converters never quarrel: a cell belongs to the one that grew it first.

6

Everything in the world is frozen flow, and a place is the slowest of all. The Reckoners measured it without touching; the fluxionist who grew the first islet in a glass chamber understood that a place can be retuned like a string. Shift blurs the land's old current, the currents of the new place give it another — and everything that grows and lives on it grows anew.
