The Bower

Chapter: Artifice

A dense skein opens inward — into a workshop that goes wherever you go.

How to open it

Pages of the entry

1

Your own workshop wherever it suits you. A dense skein is opened with an Embroidery Hoop — inside it is a Bower, a small world to build in. Its ground, sky and flux are the threads of the skein: a skein of Ember gives warm ground and Ember of the place, a skein of Tide gives water and drizzle. Wind more — the Bower grows; carry the skein on a Spindle — the whole workshop goes with it.

2

A skein opens once it holds ninety-six shares or more: a medium one three quarters full, or a large one. Hold the hoop on the skein for three seconds — the threads stretch onto it, the hoop goes into the skein and becomes its key. Whoever opened it is the owner. A greedy skein tears the hoop, a turbulent one would burst, a still one does not stretch.

3

To enter, hold the open skein with an empty hand for two seconds — the threads wrap around you and draw you in. A Loose End hangs from the sky of the Bower: hold it, and you come out where the skein hangs. The owner moves the Loose End with the hoop on a face of the ground. Guests are invited with the hoop on a player; guests enter while the owner is inside.

4

The side of the Bower follows the greatest winding: ninety-six shares give sixteen blocks, one hundred twenty-eight give twenty-four, a full large skein gives forty-eight. A Bower grows but never shrinks: what you built stays. Each new band of ground takes the nature of the threads at the time — the Bower changes ring by ring, while the sky, the light and the drizzle always follow the threads. Its edge is the Winding: nothing passes through it.

5

The bed of a Bower comes from its threads: the more shares, the more flux for your devices. The currents of the place are the threads of the skein holding eight shares or more: the Flux Workbench, the Crucible and the Brimming Jug see them. Murk settles here as anywhere: a careless Bower grows murky, and after five minutes of murk its skein does too.

Your workshop will not be lost. Draw the threads below the threshold — the Bower sleeps until you tie more on. Destroy the skein — it furls into a Furled Skein: fire, lava and blasts do not take it, and it never vanishes from the ground; unwind it, and the Bower is back, everything as it was. Whoever was inside comes out where the skein hung. Lost it entirely — call the Bower back with the hoop and Shift on a fresh dense skein of the same leading thread. Only you can erase your Bower: the hoop with Shift on the Loose End — and confirm.
