Charging Basin

Chapter: Artifice

A basin that things holding a charge of flux drink from.

How to open it

Pages of the entry

1

A Charging Basin charges things that hold a store of flux — the Grapnel and others — with the flux of the land. The basin fills with flux like a font with water, but never below the bed floor. Lay such a thing in it: it rises over the flux and drinks until it is full — thin streams run into it, the flux in the basin sinks and rises again.

2

Take the thing out with an empty hand. Fluxsteel armor nearby makes it drink faster. How much flux is in the basin, the Loupe and the spectacles show as a Halo rune.

3

The Flux Ruling Pen never runs dry for good: it draws channels at the Reckoning Desk and circles on Flowstone like a plain Ruling Pen, but drinks flux instead of ink. Put an empty one in a Charging Basin — a division per flux, ninety-six divisions when full. With it in your inventory the Loupe writes Hour Marks without a sheet of paper: a mark costs a division.

4

The Flux Trowel builds a structure to its ghost by itself. Place a ghost from a schematic in the Codex and press Build — with the Build Structure Ghost key, the button on the schematic or a right-click with the trowel in hand: the blocks in your inventory fly to their places on threads of flux, from the bottom up. It never breaks other blocks; it names what ran short, and the ghost waits. A block costs a unit of charge, a full trowel holds ninety-six. It lays four blocks a second and one more per step of Finesse. In creative a ghost builds without it.

5

The basin gives distillate too — to a thing whose charge is a current rather than flux: the Prism Rod drinks Prism. Run a siphon into the side of the basin (the thing floats above it) from a vessel of Prism and the rod fills by itself, no vial in hand: one part per step of the siphon, until it is full. The basin takes no other current and gives the siphons nothing. How much is in the thing, the Loupe writes under the basin's name.

6

Mod armor holds a charge of flux, and its features spend it: double-crouch moves, the vow and the wards, keen hearing, rime on the plate, the pattern's answer. How much is left shows in the Gear Charge row right above your armor: cells split by piece — helmet, cuirass, leggings, boots, belt, trinkets; a piece that runs dry dims and blinks its sign. An empty set is plain armor: its protection and flaws stay, its features sleep until it is topped up.

7

Living land tops up the armor you wear by itself, a little at a time: a unit every four seconds while the flux of the chunk is above the bed floor. A drained chunk, a Toll Tap and the Stillness do not — go there full. Faster is this basin: a piece of armor fills in it in seconds. A new piece comes full. What a set spends its charge on, the piece's tooltip tells, and whether the chunk tops you up — the Loupe under its flux vessel.
