The Gauge Rod is a weapon that marks a foe: a blow strikes those standing behind the target on the same line, and your next blow on the marked one is stronger. Confluence shortens the Archivist's staff, taken from the guardian of the Flooded Archive, and binds it in speculum, and a spyglass gives it the glass for a sight: Reckoner oak in measure marks and a brass ring with a lens on the head.
A blow of the rod measures: the rod lies along your line of sight behind the target, and foes on that line take a share of the blow; the line does not pass walls. The target is marked: it glows, and your next blow on it strikes harder. The mark is yours: it does not help anyone else. With mastery the rod measures further, the mark bites deeper, and at last the line marks everyone it touches.
