The Order of the Still Hour is the fluxionist's enemy: its bands set Halt Stones by workshops, and its masters guard the Stillness. Among the Reckoners were clockmakers: they measured Tempo, how fast everything in the world flows, and decided that perfection lies in rest: a stopped current does not spoil. They worked the Great Stilling, and a part of the world froze whole.
A Still Grain is a seed of that frozen world. It holds Alloy and Still, and the Loupe hears a silence in it that no living metal has. A Snarl gives the grains up when it is untangled: what got stuck in the dead flux came from there. The sign of the Order is the Hour Dial: a clock face whose hands stand at the Still Hour. It is on the Order's banners too: Bellringers pray at such a banner, and a Still Hour Pattern weaves it on a loom.
