Guard your Thaw Lantern from Rime Moths. These moths of hoarfrost hang in the air of the Stillness, frozen in flight, and the warmth of a lit lantern wakes them from twenty-four steps away: a moth settles on the lantern and drinks its store — three moths drink a shard's minute in ten seconds, and the circle freezes. One that has drunk glows warm inside. It is fragile: strike it down near the lantern, and the warmth goes back into it. It sometimes drops a Still Grain.
The Salamander, the fire lizard of the alchemists, is the lantern's friend. In the Halted Blaze it stilled together with the fire; in a lantern's circle it thaws, lies down beside it and breathes into it — the lantern burns longer — and it snaps up Rime Moths. Having given a minute of warmth, it rests for ten minutes. Outside the circle it stills again; in the Thawed it lives free.
