In the delta everything that breaks off upstream catches somewhere, and some of it catches on the driftback: a slow, broad wader of the fen shoals whose back is a living snag of bog oak, driftwood and osier. Feathers, Snagling beads and lost wicker end up in its tangle; brush a catch from its back and it only shudders and wades on.
