Structures
Clockmakers' ObservatoryThe ruin of a round tower where the Reckoners' clockmakers measured Tempo under a copper dome. They slowed it to count it, and the grove never caught up: here it is always the last hour of autumn.
Copyist's LodgeA lodge of a Reckoner copyist in the Inkpine Forest: here he boiled ink from inkpine resin and dried scrollbark for the Scriptorium.
Dismantled WeirReckoners measured the fens with weirs, and the Snaglings took them apart stone by stone: a measured current is no catch. A row of dressed stone with gaps lies across the channel; the Gauge Stone lies fallen beside it.
Fallen Gauge StoneA Gauge Stone without its head lies broken in the grass. It holds no bed any more, and its stone is no longer cast: the pickaxe takes it, and the Marked Tiles with it.
Flooded ArchiveThe Reckoners kept their ledgers under the river bed. When the river was dammed in the Great Stilling, the water went into the archive and stands there still; its gates are held by sluice valves, and the deepest vault keeps the stone they checked all their rings against.
Fluxionist's HomesteadA fluxionist settled in the quiet warm grove after the clockmakers left it, built a timbered house with amber windows and a garden by the stream, and left in turn, the workbench in the shed never woken.
Gauge RingSix Gauge Stones stand in a ring around a spring. They stay silent until a fluxionist knows the four Springs and the two Poles. By the water lies a broken frame of Reckoner stone — something once stood here.
Gauge StoneA pillar of the Reckoners. It still measures the flux around it: in the chunks nearby the current runs twice as fast. Read its head with the Loupe, and the stone gives up a Channel Record.
Halted CaravanA caravan stopped mid-step on an old road when the Stillness tore away from the world. A wheel and a crate still hang in the air where they flew; those who walked with it stand by the road, a step behind the hour.Herbalist's HutA fluxionist herbalist built his house in the fork of an old sanguine aspen, four blocks above the leafmold. He tapped the trunk from inside the room, dried heartdrops under the ceiling and kept a cold Crucible. The ladder still climbs the trunk to the hatch.
Tollkeepers' Kiln CampDomed kilns of fired brick in the Smolderwood, where the Tollkeepers burn the old brands down to coal and keep the Ember they draw in reliquaries. A toll arch stands at the path, and their collectors stand guard.
Mire ShrineA ring of stakes bound with mire threads around a driftwood idol. The Sunken bring rotten-wax candles here and feed the still water until it settles into mire. Where such a shrine stands, the murk never leaves its chunk.
Reckoner LockA Reckoner lock on a river bank: a chamber between two gates and a keeper's hut. The keepers took a share of every current that passed. Their storeroom opens when the water in the chamber stands at the lit mark.
Reckoner ScriptoriumA library of the Reckoners in the Inkpine Forest: here their scribes copied Records in inkpine resin on scrollbark. When the Stilling came they sealed the reading room with their best copies.
Reckoners' WellThe Reckoners sank this well where the flux comes up to the stone, to gauge it at the source. The shaft is marked every two stones; the stone has flowed over the pump since.
Snagling CampA clearing of the Snaglings, the small quick folk of the wild flux: three sedge shelters, a catch pole with lanterns and, in the middle, the Catch Heap where the band keeps whatever it caught. Bring a gift to the band's craving before you touch the heap.
Snagling StiltholdA home of the Snaglings over the channels of the fens: wicker huts under reed thatch on bog-oak stilts, plank walkways and, in the middle, the Catch Heap where the band keeps whatever the river brought. Bring a gift to the band's craving before you touch the heap.
Stilled Beat CircleThe Order of the Still Hour tried to stop the beat of the weald here: a ring of slate pillars chained to a monolith with a stilled heart inside. The beat went on; the stillness leaked out instead, and the aspens around turned gray and glassy.
Sunken SanctumA Reckoner sluice the Sunken took for a temple. They let the lower basin silt over until the still water rose as a lake of mire, and called a mouth up from it. The halls between were flooded on purpose: the Sodden keep them.
Toll PostAn old Gauge Stone with a brass tap driven into its side, and a counting table under a lean-to. The Tollkeepers weigh the flux they draw here and keep it in reliquaries. The land around such a post is dry to the bottom of its bed.
