Oxygen, spacesuit and climate
How to breathe in airless worlds and endure heat, cold and acid.
You cannot breathe in the mod’s worlds. There is air in a dome, in a sealed room, in a rocket cabin — and in the space suit, while its tank holds oxygen.
The spacesuit
The suit protects only when worn complete:
Spacesuit Helmet,
Spacesuit Torso,
Spacesuit Trousers,
Spacesuit Boots. It is not armor but a layer of its own: you put it
on and take it off at the
Dressing Table, and armor is worn over it.
The chestplate holds the oxygen, the charge and the modules: four module slots — tanks, regenerator, cooling unit, heating unit,
power cell, solar film. Modules are fitted at the
Suit Rack Mk1, which also refills the chestplate
with oxygen and charge.
A new chestplate is empty: before you fly, open an
Oxygen Tank Mk1 or a suit rack while wearing the
suit, and it fills it. If there is nothing to breathe and the tank is empty or the suit is not complete, a line lights up
above the hotbar: what happened and where to take shelter — in the rocket cabin or under a dome.
Open space: walking in zero gravity
Outside a ship in the void there is almost no weight. Three chestplate modules are made for going outside — they take the same four slots as air and warmth, so you have to choose:
MMU Pack — the MMU pack: you fly where you look; jump is up, sneak is down, and with no keys it holds you
in place. It uses the chestplate’s charge: an empty pack does not pull.
Mag Boots — magnetic boots: hold you on metal (iron, station plating and decks, the mod’s metals)
and on the hull of a ship or a drifting rock (the Visitor, belt rocks). Standing on a flying ship, you ride with it.
A comet nucleus does not hold: it tumbles.
Safety Tether — the safety tether hooks to the ship you stepped out of. Drift farther than 32 blocks and it
pulls you back; beyond 96 blocks or without the ship it snaps.
Air at the base
Oxygen Tank Mk1 — stores oxygen and refills suits, even while worn.- The bioreactor — algae and light make oxygen; it needs energy.
- The pump fills a sealed room; a dome holds a sphere of air even without walls.
- Oxygen flows through pipes: every installation is a node of the network with its own store.
Heat, cold and acid
Worlds can be hot or cold, and Venus has acid. Overheating and freezing build up gradually: the screen shimmers with
haze or frosts over, and your movements slow down. Suit modules, shelters and the worlds’ food protect you; against acid —
the acid-proof coating of the chestplate and an
Acid Scrubber Mk1 near the base. When the gauge reaches a quarter, a line
above the hotbar says what will save you, and the journal names what the suit needs in each world in the landing task:
the Moon — a Cooling Unit by day and a Heating Unit by night, Venus — a Cooling Unit and the coating, the giants — a Heating Unit, Jupiter
an antigravity module as well.
