Meteorites

How to find a fallen meteorite by its column of smoke, its glow or its white beam, and what to take from the crater.

Once every few days a Meteorite falls to the Earth. It falls away from dwellings — only on wild land, with no buildings, beds or villager workstations; there is no explosion, and it leaves no fire. On the Moon a meteorite falls during its event — the meteor shower: shooting stars stream across the black sky from one point, small stones strike the regolith around you (each leaves a pit with a dark stone and Meteoric Iron under it), and at the height of the shower one great meteorite comes down with its crater and white beam.

The fall

The meteor comes in from the player's side and draws a streak across the whole sky: by day — fire with a smoky tail, by night — a white-hot column and the cross-shaped glint of its head. The impact is a flash, a pillar of fire for a moment, a shock wave, a shake and a spray of embers. The chat names the direction: “A meteorite has fallen to the north. Look for the column of smoke, and at night for the glow”.

How to find the crater

Over a fresh crater a sign stands for ten minutes — or until its core is mined. It is seen from afar, beyond the render distance, by day and by night:

Where and whenWhat to look for
Earth, daya dark column of smoke over a hundred blocks tall, tongues of fire at its foot
Earth, nightan orange column of heat and a glow over the crater, a glint at the stone
Moonno air, no smoke: a white-hot beam in a golden halo against the black sky, and a fountain of sparks

For the first minute the sign burns at full strength, then it cools — the column grows lower and dimmer — and for the last half minute it fades out. Once the core is mined, the sign goes out at once. Up close, glowing cracks run across the ground from the crater.

What is in the crater

BlockWhat it gives
Meteoritethe fused crust — the block itself
Meteoric Ironwith silk touch — the whole block, otherwise 2–4 raw iron (fortune adds more)
Meteorite Corewith silk touch — the whole core, otherwise 4–8 Stardust and two finds: gold, amethyst, quartz, emerald or diamond

Mine the core with silk touch: a whole one is needed by the gate of the Earth and by your own station. In the zero-g forge meteoric iron goes into plate armor (Meteoric Plate Cuirass and the other pieces) and the Widmanstätten Blade. The journal marks the “Meteorite” stage as soon as a piece of crust is broken off.
