Pages of the entry
Silt Herons keep the mire of the Stagnant Backwater in check: they spear Mire Leeches and Murk Gnats and cough up a lump of Silt after every three meals. Where they wade, there are fewer mire creatures. A running step makes a heron take off and glide away; creep up crouching, and it stays. It stands on one leg for a long time and is easy to take for a gray snag.
At night a light glows over the still water — do not trust it. Glints are never born of a swamp, only of a Crucible; this light has a murky heart and hangs on a stalk. It is the lure of a Mire Angler: whoever comes within six steps it grabs with a lunge from the water, and the bite silts. A crouching player it notices only three steps away. On land the angler is clumsy and easy to hurt — lure it ashore. It drops Silt, and sometimes a glow ink sac.
