Distillation

Chapter: Alchemy

A thing need not be dissolved — it can be distilled, and its currents rise on their own. Read fire with the Loupe.

How to open it

  • Read with the Loupe: minecraft:fire or Campfire or Furnace or minecraft:lava
  • Notes: Alchemy — 4, Artifice — 1
  • After the entries: Distillate

Pages of the entry

1

Distillation takes things apart into currents on its own — no water, no catalyst, no hands — and sorts them into Alembics. A retort is a stone hearth under a copper gourd: put a thing with currents in it and feed the hearth coal — the thing breaks down, and its currents rise as vapor into the gourd's neck. Things go in by hand or by hopper from above, fuel by hand or by hopper from the side.

2

Alembics catch the currents — vessels with a beak, stacked on the retort's neck, up to four. Each current goes where it already is, or else into the first empty alembic. With nowhere to go, it waits in the retort, and no new thing is taken. Siphons at the alembics' sides draw the distillate away.

3

Distillation is not free: a sixth of the currents is lost and settles as murk. A brazier briquette — coal boiled down in the Crucible with Ember and Spark — burns in the hearth four times as long as coal.

4

The retort and its column of alembics are on the diagram. Optionally, two more columns on side outlets at its flanks and a settling vat behind: the entry "Side Outlets and the Settling Vat" tells of them. "Place ghost" sets it all in the world.
