The Grottoes are a mine of currents. Crystal nests are three times as many here, and each of the six bases is equally likely: all four Sources for the first Quickdust in one cave. Flowstone lies here by itself, without a shard — take the floor with a pickaxe. Cave pearls glow on the bottom of the rimstone pools (Prism 2, Tide, Halo) — for the Crucible and for the light of the Pearl Lamp; the caddis of the pools shed them now and then, and a water bucket carries a caddis home to your own pool. The onyx in the bands of the walls is a dark stone for a house.
Where to look: deep under gentle lands far inland, where dripstone caves would otherwise be. The floor is Flowstone in steps of rimstone pools, the walls have bands of dark onyx, cream drips grow from the ceiling and the floor, glowing flux veins run over the stone. The light is small: drip tips, veins, moss, pearls — bring your own. A drip hurts whoever falls on it, and one cut from above falls. Deeper in the Grottoes stand the Reckoners' Wells.
Under the uplands an underground vein of flux runs through the rock, and where it comes up to a cave the stone itself begins to flow: everything in the world is a frozen current, and here it thaws. The Reckoners found these places first and sank their Wells into them, to gauge the world's flux right at the stone. Their marks on the shaft walls can still be read.
