The Crucible heals: tonics simmer in it over a gentle fire, and the first of them, the bloom tonic, closes wounds. Old herb women brewed such things in cauldrons without knowing they were brewing currents. The bloom tonic is Bloom, life itself, thinned with Tide.

Bloom is in bread, apples and eggs; Tide is in water and kelp. Throw the glass bottle in last. Keep the heat gentle: at a strong boil the tonic curdles and the bottle dissolves. Once drunk, the tonic mends wounds for twelve seconds.
