The Honeyfall Grove gives Tempo — a rare current — straight off the trees. An amber bead swells on the ripe bark of a honey maple: take it with an empty hand — that is honey resin (Tempo 2, Craft 1). The scar beads again in about half an hour to an hour. Only grown maples give resin: a log placed by hand does not. At dusk the beads glow, so ripe maples show from afar. Tempo goes into freshet steel in the Crucible, the Quickened Thought of automata, the Tempo glyph and the gear of the hour.

Where to look: in place of a birch forest — dark maples with tiers of amber leaves, a golden haze, dry gold grass. Umberstone lies in boulders and shows on slopes: it gives bricks, sundial tiles and the chiseled dial. Foxfire glows in fallen maples (light 6), honey mushrooms at the roots (light 3). The hourbloom is open by day and folded at night; bees love it. The Honey Lantern (light 14) is made of maple planks, resin and a honey mushroom.

3

Beware at night: heaps of leaves lie in the litter, and in some a cream vein smolders — that is a Leafwight. Come within four blocks and it rises, and its touch steals Tempo: for three seconds you are slow. Wounded, it loses leaves that hang in the air for a breath. Killed, it drops a Lingering Leaf — Tempo for the Crucible as well.

4

The Reckoners' clockmakers slowed Tempo here by a hair to count it, and it never sped up again: in the grove it is forever the last hour of autumn, leaves fall slowly, and some hang for a breath. The clockmakers left observatories; later fluxionists came to the warm quiet groves and built homesteads — and left in turn.
