The Laments lead to the Sunken Sanctum, where the Mire Maw sleeps; its tooth on a Pike Pole untangles a Snarl in two blows. A Sunken Lament is a scroll in soaked wax, a song rather than a rule. "All things settle," the Sunken sing: every flux will one day sink to the bottom and become mire, and the mire remembers all that sank into it.
The laments name where the threads of every Mire Idol lead: to the Sunken Sanctum. Read an idol with the Loupe — the strands of murk point the way to the sanctum and tell how far it is. The sanctum is a half-drowned temple on stilts around a lake of ooze, and its locks open only to what is hidden inside.
In the sanctum lake sleeps the Mire Maw, the mouth of the Mother Below. It never leaves its place, but it drags you in on a current of ooze, and while Keeners sing on the stilts it drags twice as hard: take them down first. In its second phase the floor silts over in rings — stand on stilts and stones.
