Under the Gauge Stones the flux of the world does not run straight — it goes round in loops. The Reckoners built the Counting Ways there to set every current against every other, and in the heart of each loop they seated an Auditor to sum it up. The sum did not reconcile — and the order split. The loops still stand: in each, a Keywarden by the Descent Gate, an Auditor in the Heart, a Hubstone for his share, Reckoner coffers and a dark stone found nowhere else.
The way in is the Wayfinder Cord: hold it on the head of a living Gauge Stone for three seconds — the cord winds round the stone and you go down into the loop of this land. All the stones of one land lead to one loop. Each descent costs a knot of the cord; mend it with Knotted Cord.
While the cord is in your hand, a golden thread runs along the floor — the way back to the Tether Hall where you came down. The way out is at the Tether: press it and stay close. An emergency pull: crouch and hold the cord for six seconds without moving — two knots. No one sleeps in the Meanders: the walls go on moving while you dream.
