Glassfinch

Small birds the Great Stilling caught in mid-flight: they still hang in the air among the halted birches, wings mid-beat, their feathers turned to glass and a warm spark left in each chest. Come close and one thaws for a heartbeat — it darts a few blocks and stops again in the air with a glassy chime.
