The Quickstream
The Quickstream is the main channel of the flux: by its races the riverbed is twice that of a river, the current of the place is any of the forty-two, quickwater fills the sea under the islands, and the way between two arches through it is four times shorter. Under the flux of the world runs the main stream: all forty-two currents flow side by side in it as races — rivers of living flux in the air — and the riverbed of every chunk is one of its branches. The Reckoners measured it with great locks; the Tollkeepers dammed it with barrages and drink it.

Structures
Great LockThe Reckoners led the main race of the Quickstream through a lock to measure it. Its tenders still turn back every leaf and wheel a visitor moves; behind two puzzles the lower head keeps the hub of the Wheel.
Keeper's LodgeThe lodge of a Reckoner lock keeper on a small island of the Channel Reaches. The keeper is long gone; his tender still walks the porch and shuts what others open.
Still OutpostA watch of the Order of the Still Hour on the Still Brink, where the Quickstream stops by itself. The brink caught the watch mid-step; only the Sentinel still keeps his post.
Toll BarrageThe Tollkeepers took an old Reckoner lock on a captured island and dammed a race of the Quickstream with it. Below the gate the race stands gray; above it the Tollfarmer sleeps on the hub of the Toll Wheel.
