A seed is your own shard farm: planted, it grows into a current crystal, and you no longer need to hunt for nests in caves. A shard is set flux, and on its own it does not grow: there is no life in it. Brew it with Bloom, the current of life, and with its own current, and the shard comes alive as a seed. Only the six primal currents have seeds.
Gather two parts of Bloom and two parts of the shard's own current in the distillate, then throw the shard in last; any heat will do. Bloom is in bread, apples and eggs, and a dissolved shard of the same current gives four parts — enough for two seeds.
Plant the seed on any solid face — floor, wall or ceiling, like an amethyst bud. It grows in three steps — a small, a medium and a large bud — and at last into a crystal of its current. Every step takes a little flux from the land around; in drained land the seed waits until the flux comes back.
A broken bud gives its seed back whole — you can replant it, but the flux it took does not come back. A grown crystal broken with a pickaxe yields shards and half the flux it drank: seeds make no flux of their own, and a large farm needs land with living flux — by a river, not in a desert.
