Panning doubles your ore: in a furnace, concentrate gives two ingots where the ore would give one. In raw ore the metal is mixed with waste rock. A Sluice Box parts one from the other: water entering its upper edge washes away the light, and the heavy settles at the brass riffles as black sand — concentrate.

A sluice box faces the way the water drains. It needs water at its upper end — a source or a flow — and somewhere for it to drain off the lower end. Ore goes in by hand or by a hopper from above and the sides; concentrate comes out by an empty hand or a hopper below. Raw iron, gold, copper and antimony wash — and the same raw ores of other mods.
