Watch Rings and the Lens

Who guards the places of the Ringwrights, how to fight it, what ring sparks are for and what the Ringwright Lens shows.

Watch rings hang over the places the Ringwrights left behind. The first such place is the Monolith on the Moon; after that, rings guard every niche with a tablet and the great places at the ends of the roads. Rings drop Ring Spark, and sparks make the Ringwright Lens — a lens that shows what the Ringwrights left for those who look.

Watch ring

…

A ring of light about two blocks across, held in four clasps of dark metal. It does not roam the world: each ring keeps a post at its place and circles a few blocks away from it. Whoever it sees, it strikes with a beam, in a cycle:

StepHow longWhat you see and what to do
Wind-up1 sthe clasps tighten, the core flares, an aiming thread reaches for you — get out of its line
Beam1.5 snotched rims run from the ring to the target; the beam follows you with a lag — a step aside or a block in the way breaks it
Cooling2 sthe ring tilts and sinks, the clasps open — it takes half again as much damage, time for the sword

The danger sign. A ring that has taken aim at you shows even when it is behind your back: a ring of light tightens on the floor around your feet (under the beam it burns and ripples outward), and a line rises above the hotbar — “A watch ring takes aim at you — step out of its beam”. The line shows over an open window too, even while you read a tablet. The sign looks the same at every “Mod graphics” level.

  • 24 health. It never follows a target farther than 26 blocks from its post; walled in by blocks, it drifts back to the post straight through them.
  • It does not see players in Creative or spectators. With friends, each ring strikes whoever it sees itself and burns anyone who steps into the beam.
  • The beam burns but does not push: it will not knock you off a stair or a narrow bridge. Armor soaks it like an ordinary hit.
  • It does not appear on Peaceful or with spawn_mobs false.
  • It does not stand on a path: over the steps of a stair (the spiral steps in the well of the Swarm Archive) or in a passage one block wide a ring neither appears nor circles — you walk to the niche, not through it.
  • How many: no more than three at one place and four near one player. A place raises a new ring at most once every 10 seconds and rests a minute or two after a ring dies — no farming sparks faster than about one a minute.
  • A ring drops a Ring Spark 70% of the time.

Ring spark

The ring’s light, curled up into a spark. It goes into:

  • How to wear it: in either hand, or over the eye — in a slot mod: the face slot of Trinkets, the head slot of Curios (NeoForge).
  • Charge — 1200 seconds of showing. It drains second by second only while the Lens has something to show: a place of the Ringwrights or a hidden block within 48 blocks. It never breaks at zero — it goes dark; relight it with a ring spark on an anvil.
  • What you see: at an open niche — the Ringwrights’ script right on the walls (signs you already understand in turquoise, the rest in violet), a ring print with nine notches on the floor before the niche (up to nine blocks across; smaller in a cramped room, but never under three) and a palm print by the opening; from afar — a trail of huge footprints toward the nearest niche, but only eight steps ahead: the rest is yours to find. The layer washes out from you in a wave over a second and a half.
  • For you alone: what the Lens shows is seen only by the one looking through it — a friend beside you without a Lens sees nothing.
  • A sealed niche is smooth stone: the Lens does not give it away and spends no charge near it; open the place first.
Spoiler: this describes a place reached late in the game.

Tips

  • Rings strike one at a time, in turn: keep an eye on the one drawing its aiming thread and hit the one that is cooling.
  • A wall or pillar between you and a ring breaks its beam — there is almost always cover near a niche.
  • The Lens in your off hand keeps the main hand free for the sword; over the eye it keeps both free.
