Where it stands

Intake ledger: the river was measured here every hour. When they dammed it for the Stilling, the water went down the shaft and never came back up.
Register of the stacks: every current of the river basin, shelf by shelf. Shelves nine to fourteen are under water now.
Rule of the reading room: one candle per reader. Do not carry ledgers below the second sluice.
Water mark of the flood: a palm above the floor and rising. We moved the oldest ledgers down to the hall.
Order of counting: each current is counted twice, by two counters, and both sums are knotted on one cord.
Keeper of ledgers: the niche opens to whoever walks the marks in the order written on the wall under the vault, read from left to right.
Measure of the world: the long wall is one staff. We meant to fill it to the top before the Stilling.
Drain order: the left paddle lets out three spans, the right lets in two. The gate opens when only the lit span is left in the pit.
The counting hall: the left wheel raises the basin three spans, the right lowers it two. The vault opens at the lit mark.
The master stone: all our rings were checked against it. Read it, and it will show you the nearest ring.
Bindery: woven records are pressed flat here before they go to the shelves.
Archivist's note: I stay. Someone must keep counting while the water stands.
Weir model: a span of water held by one board. Every lock of ours began on this table.
