The Stillness

The Stillness is the world of the Great Stilling: Stillmetal Veins and Grain Drifts, the Order's cities, its masters and the Heart of the Stilling are there. There is no flux: the Conduit and devices are silent, and only what lies in a Thaw Lantern's circle flows. The sun stands at the horizon — the very Still Hour. Water is glass, fire is cold light, dust and drops hang in the air, people froze mid-step.

Bell TowerThe Bellringers rang the Great Stilling from the top of this tower. The bell swallowed its own peal, and every sound around it; it still hangs on its beam, and the ringers still keep it.

Clock TowerThe clockmakers of the Order wound the Great Pendulum here: while it swings, the Stillness keeps its one hour. The forest was burning when the hour stopped, and the fire is still on the walls, cold.

City of MidstepA town of the Order of the Still Hour, stopped in the middle of an ordinary day. Its people stand where the Hour found them, mid-step. The Still Gate of the Chapter still lets the Order out, and the Prior kneels before it.

spoiler

Chapel of the StillA chapel of the Order of the Still Hour, whole, as it was at the Hour. Those who prayed here are still on their knees.

The Founder's HallUnder the glass of the Dead Calm lies the round hall where the founder of the Order stood when the Hour stopped, and where he stands still. Four channels of the Springs run to him, frozen. The way down is shut by a gate that waits for the bob of the Great Pendulum.
