The Conduit and Lenses
The bracer you pour flux through: cast cost and strength, murk; the Lens Grinder and lens nodes — carriers, actions, cuts, facets and price; blanks, carrier conjunctions, the lens wheel and case, bindings, the Fluxsteel and Still Conduit.
The
Conduit is the fluxionist's weapon and tool: it strikes with the land's flux, heals, mines, relays blocks and
sets traps. Which of these is decided by the lens in its socket, and you cut the lens yourself on the Lens Grinder from nodes.
The Codex chapter is The Conduit, its first entry
The Conduit.
The Conduit
A leather bracer over fluxsteel ribs with a flux coil and a socket for a lens. The flux of the chunk you stand in runs through your arm and leaves the lens as a deed. To insert a lens, click it onto the Conduit in your inventory (the old one goes to the cursor); to take it out, right-click with an empty cursor. Cast with the right button.
| What | Rule |
|---|---|
| Cost | lens facets / 4 flux, at least one; the fluxionist's garb and the Will aptitude — together never below half |
| From where | the flux of the chunk you stand in; nothing draws below the bed floor (a tenth of the bed) |
| Strength | full in a full place; weaker in a dry one, at the very floor a little over half |
| Weak cast | less flux above the floor than the cost: the lens takes the rest and strikes weaker, the shortfall goes to murk |
| Misfire | hardly any flux above the floor: the lens only hisses and scorches the bed with a pinch of murk |
| Rough draw | flux below a third of the bed — every cast leaves murk |
| Cheap lens | a small blank clouds every 4th cast, a lens blank once in 16, a great blank never |
| Cooldown | grows with facets: 0.4 s for a simple lens, 1 s for a full small one |
The Lens Grinder

A grindstone + a pinch of quickdust = a
Lens Grinder: the wheel's stone clouds with opal, its axle turns to
brass, a ring of runes shows along its side. It has no recipe of its own. Put a blank on the wheel by clicking with it, open the window
with an empty hand, take the lens off by sneaking with an empty hand. Entry —
Lenses.
The Lens Grinder has no data recipes: a lens is assembled in the window from nodes.
- Carrier — how the action travels (one lens — one carrier; bigger blanks hold two or three as a conjunction).
- Action — what it does.
- Cut — how it multiplies and repeats (each one once per lens).
Clicking a node on the rack lays it on the lens, clicking a medallion removes it, the mouse wheel over a medallion sets its level. Every node takes facets of the blank: the first level its own, each further level adds more; the same node a second time costs half its facets again. The sheet on the right shows the lens's name, facets, cast cost, cooldown and force.

The price of a cut
- Flux: the wheel takes it by itself while it cuts — 1 flux every half second, facets × 2 in all. At the bed floor the wheel stops, sheds gray sparks and waits for flux to seep back.
- Shards: every node level asks for a shard of its Spring or Pole (the table above), the Palm is free. A missing shard is replaced
by a
Snarl Thread — one thread per shard; a node's special item (the ember moth wing of the Courier Moth) cannot be
replaced by a thread. - You can only cut nodes whose entries you have studied; unknown ones lie on the rack under a lock.
- The price is taken at the start. A lens taken off the wheel returns nothing, recutting the same lens costs again, and the lens itself never dissolves into currents.
Blanks
| Blank | Facets | Carriers | Actions | Cooldown from facets | Murk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | 1 | 2 | normal | every 4th cast | |
| 20 | 2 (conjunction) | 3 | ×0.75 | once in 16 casts | |
| 36 | 3 (conjunction) | 4 | ×0.5 | none |
The Lens Blank is grown by Confluence (mid): a small blank in the middle, two opalines, two speculum sheets and an amethyst shard
on the plinths; Prism, Lattice and Weave in vessels. A cut small lens grows together with its cut — there is no need to cut it again.
Entry —
Lens Blank.
Carrier conjunctions
Two or three carriers of one lens weave into a new path for the action — a conjunction. A set not on the list cannot be cut.
Conjunctions can be cut once you have studied the entry
Carrier Conjunctions; a lens blank holds two-carrier conjunctions, a
great blank three-carrier ones too.
| Conjunction | Carriers | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Seam Snare | Pool + Survey | whoever steps in — the action runs across the layer under the trap, and it sinks a layer lower |
| Furrow | Jet + Survey | the jet runs through blocks of the same kind in a straight furrow, man-high |
| Lode Moths | Survey + Courier Moth | moths fly around a vein, the drops fall by you |
| Puffball | Droplet + Mist | the droplet bursts into a cloud |
| Skipstone | Jet + Droplet | the droplet bounces off blocks, creatures and water |
| Stalking Mist | Mist + Courier Moth | the cloud drifts after an enemy by itself |
| Lookout Moth | Pool + Courier Moth | a moth sits and waits for an enemy, then flies as a courier |
| Tripline | Jet + Pool | a thread that snaps on whoever crosses it |
| Kin Ring | Palm + Pool | a ring walks with you and strikes enemies inside |
| Downpour | Jet + Mist + Droplet | a cloud drops droplets on enemies |
| Watchfire | Pool + Courier Moth + Jet | a moth keeps watch and strikes with a jet |
A conjunction costs flux on top of the lens's price; one fluxionist keeps one to three traps, clouds and watchers each — extra ones melt.
The lens wheel and case
- The lens wheel — hold the "Lens Wheel" key (G, rebindable in Controls): the lenses of your inventory and cases rise around the crosshair; let go, and the one you point at slots in. A short press slots the next lens in the ring.
- A
Lens Case carries twelve lenses on the belt, and the wheel sees them in it too (
Lens Case). The wheel also
sees lenses in a Lined Satchel.
Bindings
A Conduit has two binding slots: a cuff at the wrist changes every cast, an insert in the stock gives a native current. They are
set on the Flux Workbench: a Conduit with a cuff or an insert below it; the old one returns to the grid. The binding shows on the bracer
and moves to a new bracer together with the lens. Entry —
Conduit Bindings.
| Cuff | What it gives |
|---|---|
| the base the others are forged from | |
| casts 10% cheaper | |
| Bronze | cooldown 15% shorter |
| Fluxsteel | 15% cheaper and clouds half as often |
| Still | the cast does not weaken at the bed floor |
Inserts are the substance of a Spring or a Pole: Ember — a blaze rod, Gale — a breeze rod, Tide — a prismarine shard, Strata — obsidian, Lattice — nether quartz, Fray — a bone. A native cast (its main action is the insert's current or composed of it) takes a quarter less flux from the land; where the insert's Spring flows in the place, it also clouds half as often; where the opposite flows and its own does not, a quarter more. An insert has its own store of 8 flux, which fills where its Spring flows.
Other Conduits
- The
Fluxsteel Conduit draws flux not from its own chunk but from the nine around — more from the full ones, like a
Catchment: in a dry spot with a full neighborhood it strikes at full force. It is poured from a Conduit by Confluence; the lens and the
inlay move over by themselves (
Fluxsteel Conduit). - The
Still Conduit casts at full force anywhere and never touches the land's flux: every cast pays from the store in its
vial (40 flux). It is the only Conduit that works in the Stillness (
The Still Conduit). - The
Prism Rod is a beam that grows stronger with every reflection in glass, opaline, ice and still water; its charge is
Prism from a vial or a Charging Basin (
Prism Rod). - The
Flux Locket charges your things on the move — but only by water or where flux is above the bed (
Flux Locket).
What next
- A spell that no node offers, you carve yourself: Spellweave and the Pantograph.
- A touch of the Conduit starts a Confluence: Confluence.
- The flux of the place and the price: The Flux Workbench.
